Villefranche sur Mer – A Legendary place.
Located between Nice and Beaulieu, the Rade of Villefranche is a shelter used since antiquity.
It’s a place protected from the winds and the depths are important because of the very narrow continental shelf. Scientists have been studying plankton and deep-sea species for a very long time. Commander Cousteau carried out his “Précontinent III” operation. It is in this Rade that was set up in 1989 by the NUC Subaquatique, university club, courses of apnea, where we could try Sleds like in “The Big Blue”. It’s always in the same place that was organized the 1st world championship apnea in 1996, all records of Loic Leferme, a part of those of Pierre Frolla, and Guillaume Néry. Other World Championships were organized in 2000, 2005, 2012.
This harbor, located in a beautiful setting, is an important part of the heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes Department.
About the AIDA WC 2019
Created in 1996 in Villefranche sur Mer, by the NUC Subaquatique, with the support of the international federation AIDA and the Alpes-Maritimes Department, the 1st World Championship started the development of the modern freediving.
In 2019, all apneists from all over the world come together and compete individually in 3 disciplines: constant weight, constant weight without fins and free immersion. Freedivers announce the day before, the depth they expect to reach.
They must come back from the bottom with a telltale. At the end of the performance, when they emerge, they must remove their mask or nose clip, look at the jury, make an OK sign and say “I’m OK.
If this is done in order, the judges give a blank card and validate the performance. There may be penalties.
In case of syncope or if the freediver does not keep his airways out of the water, he is disqualified.
An official village allows the public to meet the champions and offers entertainment.
